... chops. Weve already said the grace Uncle Monty added after we had both sat down and begun to eat, to suggest perhaps that we must have forgotten. In truth, we had never said grace before.
Drink your milk girls, its freshly squeezed Aunt Kathy joked, and Uncle Monty laughed. We half heartedly joined in, not sure at the time that she meant squeezed from the cows we had milked that morning. Aunt Kathy had apparently gone down and brought the buckets back herself. She was a very strong woman, as I mentioned before.
With breakfast done, it was time for us to be introduced to chores on the farm. Klaus got to spend his time with Monty, getting introduced to the care of the crops. They didnt have a lot of crops, but they had a wide variety of crops they grew all around the year.
We girls were supposed to go and do Womens Work. This consisted of laundering the clothes, which Aunt Kathy did by rubbing the clothes hard across an old wash board down by the lake. Since Sunny and I were not yet strong or experienced enough to be effective at scrubbing the clothes, we were put to work carrying them to a clothes line and hanging them to dry. Sunny just put up a false grin, and said nothing else. The matter was let drop, but Sunny soon went back to the flat expression and ice princess manner that she usually had.
As lunch time approached, we were famished. I asked Aunt Kathy when lunch was, and she smiled and said You were told to eat a big breakfast, dear. We dont stop for lunch. That would be wasting the daylight. Youll just have to eat a big dinner tonight.
We were taught to mend, and we went about and fed the goats, horses, and Big Red, their black lab, who owned the yard. Sunny asked Why is it Big Red, if its jet black? Aunt Kathy laughed and said Its your Uncle Montys sense of humor. Youll understand after youve been here a while.
When it came to the care of the few horses they had, Aunt Kathy was meticulous with them, polishing the bits, bridles and saddles. She checked their horse shoes, and showed us the finer points of brushing the horses, and in general, how to care for them. Near end of the day, Aunt Kathy told us that she had to wash the Horses Genitals and did we want to learn how to do it?
We both said No, thats ...
